A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” declared the head of state.
The official reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency finished the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his government's economic vision for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in civilian projects. They were built at an accelerated pace, beating expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled significant questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an previous collision this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent pause in the development and management of all similar projects.
This halt was requested pending a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "calls for immediate answers."
In reaction, the national leader asserted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and management of these national projects.
