Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements made by skipper Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "weak men".

Stokes made this message in several conversations in the wake of England's loss in the second match of the Ashes series versus the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

However, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "weak men" observation after his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The team afterwards went on a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his players had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay in contention in the series.

Yet, Crawley asserted the messaging from Stokes and head coach McCullum had stayed in line with their previous three years in charge.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," said the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

Australia Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal on day four came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England six down for 207 chasing a daunting target of 435 runs.

This means, Australia require four wickets on the final day to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead after three Tests.

Defeat will extend England's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes series defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in only 11 days of cricket – with England losing the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a formidable team. It was always going to be hard touring here against them. They were the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place In Question

While Crawley's innings in the third Test probably answers questions about his short-term place in the side, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 runs in the team's second innings on day four, extending his poor record against Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

However, Crawley said any suggestion Pope is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is talk externally. There's no chat like that regarding Pope amongst the players," he concluded.
